Trouble-shooting

Internet video calling requires a high-speed internet connection, webcam and microphone. Group video conferencing grabs megabytes of internet bandwidth which can cause video call performance to deteriorate. To ensure a more trouble-free experience:

  1. Use a laptop or desktop computer for the online meeting. A mobile phone connection can have frequent dropped calls.

  2. Using a headset/earphone for hands-free operation will also improve your experience. Be comfortably seated (not lying down). So as not to disturb the focus of other meeting participants, be in a quiet room and be comfortably seated (not lying down).  Lock your door to prevent interruptions and distractions.

  3. Free up as much computer resources as possible. Close all other applications, browser tabs, etc. Turn off unnecessary computer programs that may be running in the background.  Pause applications that constantly refresh or sync periodically in the background (e.g., Facebook, Drop Box, Google Drive, Evernote, etc.)

  4. Make sure no other applications or devices in your network are using up bandwidth, like huge downloads, streaming media (e.g., Netflix), etc. If possible, ask others in your household to refrain from streaming any movies or playing online games as these tend to drain your internet connection.

  5. When video is not essential, participants with low upload bandwidth can turn off their video.

  6. Wear earbuds or a headset to minimize audio feedback between your speakers and your microphone.

  7. Mute your audio while you are not talking (but remember to un-mute when you need to).

  8. If you are screen-sharing an application, consider sharing only the relevant areas by making it smaller.

  9. Plug into a network cable if you are on wifi.

  10. Avoid distractions and background noise while you’re on-air: mute your phone, timer alarms, etc., and close the door!

  11. Check if your device setup is compatible with system requirements for the video call:
System Requirements for Free Conference Call
    System Requirements for VSee
    System Requirements for Skype
